Debt records
Totals by person
This summary groups only outstanding debt records by debtor name and sorts from highest total to lowest.
How It Works
The tracker stores each debt record locally in your browser with a debtor name, amount, and note. It then adds up records by debtor name to produce a ranked summary from highest total debt to lowest. Because the data stays local-first, the tool also includes JSON export and import so you can back up the records or restore them on another device.
Example
If Minh owes you 2,000,000 VND for a short-term loan and later owes another 500,000 VND for a shared expense, both records stay separate in the debt list while the summary block shows Minh with a combined total of 2,500,000 VND.
Best use cases
- Track personal loans to friends or relatives.
- Log money you paid on behalf of someone else.
- Keep short notes for each debt so you remember the context later.
- Export a backup before cleaning the browser, changing machines, or reinstalling the OS.
Storage behavior
- Records are saved with browser local storage on the current device.
- No account or server sync is used in this version.
- Importing a backup replaces the current local dataset in this browser.
- Export files are plain JSON so you can keep your own archives.
Good data habits
- Use one consistent spelling for the same person so grouped totals stay accurate.
- Use one real currency per dataset unless you only care about rough notes.
- Write short but specific notes such as “lunch advance” or “bike repair loan”.
- Back up regularly if the tracker matters to your real cash flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an account to use this tracker?
No. The tool stores records locally in your current browser, so it works without login or signup.
Will my data follow me to another device automatically?
No. Local browser storage stays on the current device and browser. Use JSON export before switching devices, then import that file on the new machine.
How does the summary rank people?
It groups debt records by debtor name and sorts the totals from highest amount owed down to the lowest.
Can I edit or remove a debt record later?
Yes. Each saved record has edit and delete actions in the debt list.
Does changing currency convert the amounts?
No. Currency only changes the display format. Enter all amounts in one real currency if you want the totals to remain meaningful.
