How It Works

The calculator subtracts your normal weekly hours from total hours worked to find overtime hours. Regular pay = normal hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × overtime multiplier.

Example

Regular rate: $20/hour. Normal hours: 40/week. Total hours: 52/week. Overtime multiplier: 1.5×. Regular pay = 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime pay = 12 × $20 × 1.5 = $360. Total = $1,160.

Inputs explained

  • Regular hourly rate: your base pay per hour before overtime.
  • Normal weekly hours: your standard contract hours (default: 40).
  • Total hours worked: actual hours in the pay period including overtime.
  • Overtime multiplier: how many times your regular rate overtime hours pay (default 1.5×).

Common multiplier options

  • 1.5× (time-and-a-half): most common legal minimum.
  • 2.0× (double time): common for weekend/holiday overtime.
  • 1.0× (straight time): pays regular rate for all hours above threshold.
  • Check your employment contract or local labor laws for the correct multiplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this overtime calculator work?

Enter your regular hourly rate, normal weekly hours, total hours worked, and overtime multiplier. The calculator splits your hours into regular and overtime, then calculates the pay for each.

What is the default overtime multiplier?

The default is 1.5× (time-and-a-half), which is a common legal minimum for overtime in many countries. You can adjust it to match your employment agreement.

Can I use this for different pay periods?

Yes — enter your hours and rate for whichever pay period you are calculating. For a weekly payroll run, enter weekly totals. For bi-weekly, combine two weeks first.

Does this calculator account for taxes or deductions?

No. It calculates gross overtime pay only. For net take-home estimates, use the Paycheck Calculator after finding your gross pay here.
